10 questions every boss should to ask your employees

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

As headhunters we speak to high performing candidates on  daily basis, gaining a better understanding of their current role and responsibilities and their aspirations for the next career move. Sometimes our call is made at just the right time, sometimes the phone is put down and we are asked (not always politely) not to call again and sometimes candidates just want to talk and get a feel for the market in general to benchmark their own position, experience and package. In many of our discussions there is often a recurring team, and that is one of being unappreciated, with the candidate often feeling the boss does not know his/her motivations, the challenges they may be facing inside or out of work, or communicating future career paths for them in the business.

Today, Talent Partners publish our list of 10 questions that every boss should ask his/her employees in the months again, let us know if this impacts and workforce morale and productivity!

  1. What would be the one thing that, if it changed in your current role, would make you consider moving on?
  2. If you could make any changes about your job, what would they be?
  3. If you could go back to any previous position and stay for an extended period of time, which one would it be and why?
  4. If you suddenly became financially independent, what would you miss most about your job?
  5. In the morning, does your job make you jump out of bed or hit the snooze button?
  6. What makes for a great day?
  7. What can we do to make your job more satisfying?
  8. What can we do to support your career goals?
  9. Do you get enough recognition?
  10. What can we do to keep you with us?

These questions will help you determine how your employees feel about their jobs. At the end of this process you will have a much better understanding of who is highly committed to your business and who might be on the “exit list”.
