The work place today

Let’s face it, the recent events on Wall Street are disturbing to everyone in every industry, including recruitment! Who would have predicted that some of the most recognisable financial services brands in the world would be where they are today. As some of these financial institutions file for bankruptcy, the stock markets take a significant hit and jobs continue to be shed. We hear the voice of George Lee in our heads and good news seems far away!

And yet, the market is not all doom and gloom. Some businesses are thriving in today’s marketplace and secretly hope that economic conditions stay as they are for another year or so as they attempt to maximise the opportunities this economic slowdown has presented to them.

In today’s marketplace employers still find it difficult to attract high performing individuals. Some of this is due to the fear of uncertainty that exists in a candidates mind about making a career move at this time. It is also true to say that many senior executives are now coping with a larger and more diverse workload as they attempt to adapt to the changing market positions and therefore are not visible to recruiters.

Talent Management at it’s best

Friday, September 12th, 2008

As regular readers of this blog will know, I am an avid sports fan. Watching Kilkenny successfully defend their all Ireland crown against Waterford last week and in the process secure their first three in a row in 95 years, one couldn’t help but be impressed with their near perfect display.

A goal of all coaches and business leaders is to build high performing teams, where the sum of the whole is greater than its individual components. The reality is that this rarely happens but last Sunday, Brian Cody and his management team saw their dreams and aspirations come to fruition with an outstanding display that blew away the opposition.

Every player’s focus was on the team, and doing what was best for the team, the individual came second. To see Henry Shefflin his colleagues hook and block, harry and chase, defend and attack with equal was brilliance was no surprise as this is the team’s hallmark, but from the outside what is amazing about these performances is the consistency with which they are delivered.

In sport and business, people talk about desire, hunger and the will to win. When you haven’t won before you can have that hunger and desire in abundance, but for the majority of this team they were winning for the 4th, 5th or 6th time and yet the hunger and desire they displayed was sensational and you could be forgiven for believing this was their first attempt for all Ireland glory.

What makes them so good? Is it the management of Brian Cody and his colleagues or is it that we are witnessing a generation of golden hurlers like Shefflin, Delaney, Walsh, Hickey & Fitzpatrick to name just a few, that are so driven and focused that they could manage themselves to success.   My guess is that it is a combination of both, but I wish I didn’t have to guess, if I could bottle it imagine what the future would hold…………

PS If they want to bring this brilliance and consistency to Talent Partners  then please call me!
